This is a quick guide to words and definitions commonly referred to in Girl Scouts of the Fox River Area, Inc. Words and definitions unique to Girl Scouting may be found in handbooks, leaders’ guides and other Girl Scouts of the USA publications.

Association: Eight geographical areas within the council made up of all registered Senior and adult Girl Scouts.
Association Chair: The volunteer responsible for calling and chairing association meetings, dealing with council business and policies, and leading the association delegation at the annual council meeting.
Camp Winnecomac: A 40-acre council-owned property located on the southeastern edge of the 1000 Islands Environmental Center in Kaukauna. Available September - May to troops for program activities. Facilities include two year-round buildings.
CEO: Chief Executive Officer. The professional staff member who works with the council president, the board of directors, and the staff to coordinate the operation of the council.
Council: This six-county jurisdictional area covers Menominee, Winnebago, Outagamie, Waupaca, Shawano, and part of Calumet counties. Included in our jurisdiction are the Oneida, Menominee and Stockbridge-Munsee reservations. Our council name is Girl Scouts of the Fox River Area, Inc.
Day Camp: A progressive outdoor summer experience for Daisy, Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts. Offered at Camp Winnecomac in Kaukauna and Camp Vic-to-Rae in New London, and selected parks/sites within the council.
Day Camp Manager: Member of the council staff who works with council and day camp programs.
Delegate: An adult or girl age 14 or older elected by an association to help assure the direction and decisions within the council are made democratically and with input from the total Girl Scout membership.
Emergency Contact: An adult who can be reached at all times during a troop activity. This person maintains trip itinerary and contact information while troop is away.
Episodic Volunteer: An adult providing skills and enrichment activity at the council level on a sporadic basis.
GSUSA: Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) -- not Girl Scouts of America.
Handbooks: Brownie, Junior, Cadette, and Senior Girl Scout program books covering Girl Scouting, activities and recognitions for each level.
Individually Registered Girls: (Also called “Juliettes”) Girls who register as members of GSUSA and are able to participate in all Girl Scout activities, but are not affiliated with a troop.
Individually Registered Adults: Adults who register as members of GSUSA and serve the council or service unit in areas other than troops.
Leader: An adult who works in partnership with girls to carry out the Girl Scout program.
Leader’s Digest - Blue Book of Basic Documents: Book describing Congressional Charter, Constitution and Policies of GSUSA. Provided free to each troop as a council service.
Leaders’ Guide: The leaders’ guide to each program level handbook.
Membership Staff: Members of the council staff who work with service teams, leaders and program volunteers in providing membership service and outreach opportunities to members of the council.
Program and Property Director: Member of the professional staff who plans, implements and evaluates council program events and develops resources to assist volunteers in providing quality program to girls.
Program Goals: The four goals of the Girl Scout experience: to help a girl to develop to her full individual potential; to relate to others with increasing skill, understanding and respect; to develop values to guide her actions and decision making; and to contribute to the improvement of society working in cooperation with others.
Program Coordinator: Member of the council staff who works with council programs.
Program Volunteer: An adult providing program skills and enrichment activity assistance to troop, service unit or council events.
Public Relations Representative: An adult providing direct contact with local media for the purpose of publicizing troop and service unit activities.
Resident Camp: A wide variety of outdoor program opportunities for girls entering second through twelfth grades. Offered at Camp Birch Trails (CBT), located near Merrill, WI.
Resident Camp Manager: Member of the council staff who works with council and resident camp programs.
Safety-Wise: A book of health, safety and program standards and procedures for troop activities. Provided free to each troop as a council service.
Service Team: Community volunteers providing administrative assistance for Girl Scout troops and events in a given area. The team may include a service unit manager, troop organizers, troop consultants, school coordinators, and a public relations representative.
Service Unit Manager: The person(s) responsible for maintaining and coordinating Girl Scouting in a community.
Service Unit: Includes all Girl Scouts, girls and adults in a designated area or community.
STUDIO 2B: An opportunity for Girl Scouts, ages 11 – 17, to choose from a variety of activities and resources so that their needs and interests are best met, based on a “by girls, for girls” approach.
STUDIO 2B destinations: Experiences that allow girls ages 12 – 17 to travel throughout the country and world to explore their interests.
Troop: Girls registered as members of GSUSA participating in groupings large enough to provide an experience in self-government and small enough to allow for the development of the each girl. A troop consists of at least one registered adult and three girls from more than one family.
Troop Camper: An adult who has met the requirements, usually through council training, to take Girl Scout troops camping.
Troop Committee: Adults who register with a troop and assist the troop as drivers, meeting helpers, telephoners, record keepers, and product sales managers.
Troop Consultant: Community volunteer who advises leaders on program activity and implementation.
Troop Coordinator: Community volunteer who performs combined duties of organizer and consultant.
Troop Organizer: Community volunteer responsible for recruiting leaders and girls and organizing troops.
Wide Games: A game that follows a trail or path, with stations or sites offering things to learn or do along the way.
